Mayor Matt Pacifico has recently established a Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) to engage more young people in the community.
The purpose of the MYC is to provide area high school students the opportunity to share their ideas and concerns about issues young people face today. From advising the Mayor on key priorities to acting as a liaison between the school hall and City Hall, the MYC works together to give a voice to young people across our community.
Similar initiatives are currently ongoing in cities around the country, as well as national youth conference held yearly by the National League of Cities in Washington, D.C.
The Mayor is seeking an engaged group of approximately 20 high school juniors and seniors from across Altoona to participate on the MYC. In order to be considered for participation, interested students will need to complete an application and provide two letters of recommendation.
The application will be open to junior and senior students who attend the Altoona Area High School, Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School and Great Commission School. The MYC will take place during the school year and will require that students apply on a yearly basis to participate.
Students will meet once a month at approximately 3:15p.m. for one hour. The meeting location will alternate between Altoona Area High School and Bishop Guilfoyle High School each month. The MYC will officially meet in November 2017.
The application period will open Monday, August 21, 2017. The deadline to submit applications and recommendation letters will be Friday, September 29, 2017.
